Ernst van Tonder


Ernst van Tonder (b. 24 February 1990, Knysna) began his musical training at the age of 4 in Bloemfontein, taking recorder lessons with Kobie Colditz. In 1997 he move to Richards Bay where he would receive most of his initial musical training. In 1999 he went to Grantleigh College where he started clarinet lessons with Marie Ackerman (Koortz) as well as saxophone and piano lessons with Hayley White (Smith) between 2007 and 2008. In 2008 Ernst was the bursary winner of the Zululand Mondi Eisteddfod, winning trophies for solo performance, composition, ensemble, and instrumental versatility. In 2012 he graduated with his BMus degree, specializing in composition, at Stellenbosch University, under the tutelage of Prof. Hans Roosenschoon and clarinet with Maria du Toit. As a composer, he has been commissioned by schools in New Zealand and Portugal to transcribe works for Concert and Jazz Band.

In 2013 and 2014 he was awarded the SAMRO composition bursary. In 2013 Ernst started his MMus at Stellenbosch University, specialising in composition under the supervision of Prof. Hans Roosenschoon.
